Ohio State University

Ohio State University (OSU) is located right in the center of Columbus, Ohio, with the Olentangy River cutting right through campus. Speaking of which, OSU actually possesses the third largest University campus in the United States. Because it began as a farming college, the human ecology and agriculture program is highly esteemed. Other strong programs at OSU include the Business, Engineering, Medicine, and Law departments. Classes are on the larger side, but are also academically challenging.

Students at OSU are known for having a “work hard, play hard” mentality. They will hit the books when they have to, but weekends are free game! Joining clubs and party-hopping with acquaintances is cited as some of the best ways to make friends. The Greek Life here thrives and is known for throwing some of the best bashes of the year. The social life here is also known for being incredibly friendly to LGBT students.

Sports are a huge part of campus life. The Ohio State Buckeyes – named after the state tree – are Division I teams. The football stadium is a hub of undergrad activity during the season and the students take a lot of pride in having one of the best teams in the U.S.

When to Search

Because most students favor housing in the University District, it’s essential to begin looking for a good apartment a full year before you plan to live off campus. Though there are tons of housing options in the University District, the good ones go fast. Almost everyone begins searching for and viewing apartments in October and November. By the time May comes around, the frenzy has died down and most students have their leases signed and their housing secure for the next school year. Though there is usually housing available in other surrounding OSU neighborhoods – Victorian Village, Italian Village, and the Short North – they will likely be further away from undergrad culture than many would like.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
